15 best afternoon tea in Essex
We searched for top- and bottom-quality cakes, the juiciest jams and the tastiest scones and found several small companies serving tea just as tasty as in the big hotels and restaurants. After a good laugh, we chose our 15 favorite tea rooms for the afternoon.
1. Mrs Salisbury, Muldon.
Day tea picture: Tea Mrs. Salisbury, Meldon.
Mrs. Salisbury is a super nice tea shop in Maldon, Essex and is currently voted best afternoon tea in Essex by TripAdvisor. So we thought this would be a good place to start! Opened in 2014 by Mrs Salisbury and her family, the Tea Room is an independent family business that is very popular with its residents. Besides breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea they also spend the evening in a bistro and have a mobile dining car – which was very popular during Covid!
What’s for tea? The signature contains the afternoon tea: Fresh and stuffed sandwiches, curly sandwiches and locally grown Essex jam, pies and great sweets. All-you-can-eat tea and coffee. Homemade cocktails and fizzes can be ordered on request at extra cost.
That’s £19.95 per person.

That’s £20.95 per person.

This special vintage tearoom is tucked away in a furniture store, but offers an exquisite selection including a special tea menu. Bring your own champagne! Prested Hall is a beautiful 15th century mansion. For centuries in North Essex, which lies on the edge of a lake. This boutique hotel is known for organizing weddings and parties. The best thing about the afternoon tea here is that they offer a children’s portion at a lower price, making it ideal for family holidays. Children will also enjoy exploring the lush grounds around the hotel.
What’s for tea? Prested Hall Day tea has a seasonal theme and uses ingredients that grow locally at this time of year. The festive menu consisted of cranberries, orange and fruit cakes, homemade cakes and a selection of classic sandwiches. There is also Gentleman’s Tea (slightly sexist?), which is a spicy one. Fresh strawberries and rolls (Photo: Lucyroo)
You can recognize the famous Wilkin & Sons Tiptree logo in every supermarket in the UK, and I even started watching Tiptree Jam jumping over a pond in the US! Jamfruit is grown locally in Essex (you may have seen other tea houses on this list that mention such a favourite brand) and you can visit many of their farms and teahouses throughout the county. History began in the early 1700s with Trewlands, a farm that later became the main jam factory in the village of Tiptry in Essex. The most famous is the Little Scarlet Jam; a reserve of small and exclusive strawberries, so sought after that even the queen is asking for it! Today it is a modern brand with an invaluable reputation and jam is the only way to make jam in Essex.
