One of the best ways to get a taste of Paris is to simply wander, and your nose will lead you to some of the city’s many boulangeries. It’s hard to resist the smell of freshly baked croissants, and making a stop into one of these delightful bakeries is an activity that feels like a treat, even though it’s simply breakfast.

Just when you thought you’d found the best bakery in Paris, new ones come along that challenge your taste buds. Here are two new bakeries to tempt you.

The land and the monkeys

When you look out the window of Land & Monkeys and smell the unmistakable aroma of baked bread, you imagine yourself in a typical French bakery. Upon closer inspection, we saw that all the products were plant-based, although they all looked the same: Delicious chocolate rolls, freshly baked baguettes, large loaves of crusty rustic bread, lemon and fruit tarts, among others, were on the shelves and in the racks.

We decided to do the ultimate taste test and see how a vegan croissant would fare compared to a traditional buttercream croissant. When we tasted it, we were pleased and surprised that it was just as layered (lots of crumbs fell out – good sign!) and almost as buttery as the real thing.

The founders of Land & Monkeys, the first fully vegetarian and vegan bakery in Paris, Rodolphe and Yoshimi Landemaine, already own the successful bakery chain Maison Landemaine in Paris, which uses the highest quality French organic ingredients. At Land & Monkeys, standards and quality control are just as stringent and ingredients are purchased no further than 125 miles from Paris. They are also environmentally conscious and do not use plastic in their reusable bags and totes; they also give customers a 10% discount if they bring their own bags and totes. Land & Monkeys also donates 2% of its profits to non-profit organizations that protect animals.

After our first visit, we became regulars and enjoyed products like the tomato-basil bread, raisin skewer, whole wheat bread and mille-feuille.

The Land & Monkeys also offers sandwiches, quiches, vegetable platters, a bar with coffee, tea and freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juice, and special weekend brunches. If COVID allows, there will be tables inside and outside.

Tapestries and cakes


Septime is one of the most renowned restaurants in Paris, with a coveted Michelin star and praise from culinary critics around the world. The team has also opened a less formal sister restaurant, Clamato, an excellent wine cellar, and both restaurants have recently started offering take-out service.

The latest project from the team behind Septime et Clamato is Tapisserie Patisserie, an artisan bakery. The bakery is just steps away from the Septime and makes traditional breads and pastries daily and offers seasonal products. La Tapisserie Patisserie sources high quality eggs, butter, fruit and other natural ingredients, mostly organic, from small farms, farmers and food producers. The organic flour comes from a growing area near Paris, and some of the grain is milled with stones. The result is one of the freshest and most delicious breads and cakes in Paris. On the day of our visit, we tried a warm mini chocolate babka, which turned out to be much more delicious.

All products are baked daily in the restaurant’s semi-open kitchen, where you can watch the staff unload trays of freshly baked bread and pastries, place them in baskets and carry them to the counter.

Tapisserie Patisserie’s signature dishes are chocolate and caramel cake, vanilla cake, apple pie, flans and Kouign Aman, a puff pastry with sugar and caramel from Brittany.
