One of the biggest struggles in the work-life balance arena is how to maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life. Sure, there are people who are able to maintain a healthy balance with little difficulty, but it is not the norm. The ability to balance the two is a skill that is learned through experience and training.
As a travel advisor, it’s easy for me to become consumed by my job. I get to travel the world, meet interesting people, and get paid well for it. I can walk down the street and be approached by a potential client through a friend. And, as a destination, the travel world beckons with opportunities and challenges. It’s a beautiful thing. But there is one thing that can turn an otherwise beautiful and fulfilling job into a living nightmare: stress.
Often, it’s hard to juggle our work and personal lives. Yet, many of us find ourselves working longer hours and for longer hours than we would like to. When we do, we often feel guilty about what we’re doing to our personal lives. But what can we do?
Vacations are in jeopardy as variations spread, passenger confidence drops, and mask requirements are reintroduced.
Travel advisers are attempting to keep themselves and their customers sane while juggling shifting limitations, testing requirements, cancellations, and rescheduling.
Travel Experts, the host agency, revealed how some of their travel advisers are dealing with the turmoil.
“We asked our advisers what they’re doing to remain on the ‘balancing beam’ during these hectic and difficult times so they can be the best they can be for their customers,” Sharon Fake, Travel Experts’ director of operations, said. “We discovered that music interludes, daily massages, online games, window shopping for clothing, lengthy discussions with other advisers, and, of course, drinks, lots of various cocktails, were some of the ways advisors kept sane,” says the report.
What’s Hot Right Now
One of the agents who turns on the music is Linda de Sosa of Bucketlist Travel Consulting in Houston.
“As I sit on hold listening to violin concertos, hoping to salvage a portion of their penalties for clients who were supposed to leave next week but are afraid they will be trapped onboard, I’m canceling yet another cruise for clients who were supposed to leave next week but are afraid they will be trapped onboard, “de Sosa stated. “At the same time, I’m making an internet reservation for a massage. Oh, and the cruise company has now come back on and said that any fines would not be converted to credit. “Turn up the volume.”
Holly Lombardo, owner of Holly Lombardo Travel in Atlanta, is working nonstop.
“I’ve recently remarked that this summer seems nearly more difficult than last spring,” Lombardo added. “Clients have a million questions, and it doesn’t stop until their vacation leaves, and even then, I may receive a phone on a Sunday morning asking me to help when a customer gets a delayed test result and has to be on a plane in two hours.” “I’m at an all-time high in terms of stress.”
She goes to her pals for stress relief.
“First, I tell myself that doing my best is enough, and then I put my head down and push through,” she said. “If that doesn’t work, I typically call an associate or join a Facebook group of agents who understand exactly how I’m feeling.” If that doesn’t work, I pour myself a cool gin and tonic and let out a huge breath when 6 p.m. arrives.”
Getting away from it all, according to Stacy Small of Elite Travel International in Maui, was a wonderful stress relief.
“I did something a little weird this week,” Small said. “I did exactly what I usually advise people to do: I went on a genuine vacation.” Well, not the exotic, bucket-list vacation I was hoping for, but a short journey to the mainland for a low-stress, fun-filled six-day break in San Francisco. It was also a reminder that we all need a change of scenery and a shot of fresh and different energy.”
Susan Kelly of Seattle’s Luxury Adventure Trips has even created a new term.
“If there’s one thing the epidemic has taught us, it’s that nothing is guaranteed. My customers are eager to travel and are well-versed in other cultures “Kelly said. “They’re upbeat but cautious, and they’re aware that their dream vacations may be jeopardized owing to Covid. ‘Fingers Crossed Travel Planning,’ I call it. I strongly urge them to get travel insurance. I’m not sure why anybody would leave their house without it.”
Clients are likewise anxious, and many agents are assisting them in calming down.
Pam Walker of Walker Adventures in Palm Coast, Florida, communicates with customers on a weekly basis through a newsletter.
“How am I going to stay sane?” Well, I’m trying my best to keep my customers up to date “Walkter said. “Since March of 2020, I’ve been sending out a ‘Happy Friday’ email, which I’m continuing doing in 2021. I make an effort to dispel the dread and worry. There’s a lot of dread out there. On a daily basis, I do research and consult with colleagues. Having friends from all around the globe is incredible. Who else except travel consultants and industry professionals can claim that? “I adore this line of work.”
Clients are also communicated with on a regular basis by Trish Gastineau of Simply Customized Travel in Fort Myers, Florida.
“I believe it’s critical right now to help temper expectations,” Gastineau added. “I’ve been telling my customers that travel after the Covid epidemic would be quite different from what it was before the outbreak. I emphasize the need of maintaining patience and a sense of humor, as well as staying in contact with me for last-minute adjustments.”
The world of work is becoming increasingly divided between those who work for themselves and those who work for others. This is particularly true in the world of work-related travel.
