It wasn’t too long ago that tourists visiting the Caribbean were decried as the “fat cats” of the cruise industry. But that’s all changed now, thanks to a new cruise ship making its inaugural stop in St. Kitts. St. Kitts welcomes the first cruise ship since the industry shutdown in the Caribbean.

It was a very long wait for St. Kitts and Nevis to get its first cruise ship since the industry was shut down nearly three years ago. But after the Carnival Victory docked at the port of Basseterre in St. Kitts, Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris told a cheering crowd that the industry was now back.

After the industry shutdown, the cruise industry on St. Kitts has been up in the air, with cruise lines canceling bookings and the island’s government losing revenue. But now the first cruise ship in three years is making its way to St. Kitts, and the government is hoping that this will be a sign of a rebound in tourism.

Cruising has returned to St. Kitts and Nevis.

The arrival of the Seabourn Odyssey, which will make a weekly port call there until October, marked the return of cruising to the island country.

As the ship landed in South Friars Bay, passengers and crew were welcomed by a ship-to-ship salute, live steelpan performances, and the country’s famous drummers.

“Today is a very special day for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis, as we cordially welcome the luxury Seabourn Odyssey to our shores,” Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris remarked. “Because tourism is one of the major generators of the economy, we want to reopen the destination for tourists and responsible travel. We’ve taken a step-by-step approach to resurrecting the cruise industry, with the goal of helping our local economy while also delivering a safe and enjoyable on-island experience for our visitors.”

Minister of Tourist, Hon. Lindsay F.P. Grant, stated, “We are delighted to welcome the Seabourn Odyssey to St. Kitts and Nevis for the highly-anticipated relaunch of our cruise tourism industry.” “St. Kitts is a popular tourist destination, and I want to congratulate our cruise line partners and stakeholders on the island for working so hard with us to ensure that all of the required criteria were fulfilled in order for ships to return to the Federation successfully.”

As the summer continues, additional cruise ships from Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean International will dock in St. Kitts.

This year’s initial calls for each ship are as follows:

  • The Celebrity Summit will take place on July 29th.
  • The Allure of the Seas will be sailing on August 11th.
  • The Celebrity Equinox is on August 24th.
  • The Symphony of the Seas will be sailing on August 26th.

The following is the current health and safety policy for any cruise ship visiting St. Kitts and Nevis:

  • Vaccination is required for all staff and passengers above the age of 18.
  • Within 72 hours after homeport embarkation, all passengers and staff, including children, must produce a negative RT-PCR test.
  • Cruise guests will only be able to participate in bubble-vaccinated excursions and activities.
  • Passengers and staff members are prohibited from interacting with the general public.

The St. Kitts Tourism Authority and the Ministry of Health have collaborated with partners to provide fully vaccinated ‘Travel Approved’ bubble tours to highlight the island’s highlights, including the UNESCO-listed Brimstone Hill Fortress, the St. Kitts Scenic Railway, and Caribelle Batik.
