Royal Caribbean, the biggest cruise line in the world, is looking to expand its fleet with new ships and routes. In a move that could shake up the industry, it recently announced that it would be adding a second ship to its fleet, but one that would fly the U.S. flag. The news came a month after Carnival, another big cruise line, said it would add a third U.S.-flagged ship to its fleet.
Royal Caribbean International (RCL), one of the cruise industry’s most recognized brands, has unveiled plans to return to the U.S. market for the first time in 17 years with new ships from Carnival.
Royal Caribbean Cruises and Carnival Cruise Lines announced that they have renewed their contracts with Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., parent company of the cruise lines, to continue operating cruises from the United States to the Caribbean. The contract renewal includes 15-day Caribbean cruises to the Royal Caribbean International brand, and 14-day Caribbean cruises to Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Magic and Carnival Vista brands, both of which will now depart from the Port of Galveston, Texas. The Royal Caribbean International cruise line has resumed operations in the United States. After a nearly 16-month voyage, the Freedom of the Seas became the first Royal Caribbean ship to greet passengers in the United States, as well as the first cruise ship to do so from PortMiami, this weekend. Freedom set sail on the first of a summer-long series of three-night weekend and four-night weekday getaways to Perfect Day at CocoCay, the cruise line’s private island destination, and Nassau, both in the Bahamas, with 93 percent of the onboard community fully vaccinated and just in time for Fourth of July weekend (the cruise departed July 3).
Through August, Royal Caribbean plans to bring back nine additional ships, including Anthem of the Seas in the United Kingdom, Serenade and Ovation of the Seas in Alaska, and the brand-new Odyssey of the Seas in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The cruise company will reveal plans to relaunch its whole fleet across the world by the end of the year in the following weeks.
Freedom of the Seas, which will debut its $116 million makeover in March 2020, will include The Perfect Storm pair of high-speed waterslides, a resort-style Caribbean poolscape, the cruise line’s first Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen, and new, dedicated areas for youngsters and adolescents.
