For the last two years, Mexico has been at the center of an international dispute over vaccines. The country’s president, Enrique Peña Nieto, has come under fire from parents who refuse to allow their children to be vaccinated over safety concerns. As of December, the Mexican government had received more than 500,000 requests for vaccination exemptions, and about one out of six children are not vaccinated.

Today in Mexico City, President Enrique Peña Nieto announced that the government will no longer require proof of vaccination before granting an international visa to foreign visitors. The announcement comes as a result of a new law that allows the government to waive the requirement as part of a series of proposed reforms designed to modernize the country’s visa program.

One of the most controversial issues in recent years has been the vaccination of children. This has caused lots of controversy and some claim that vaccinations are not necessary and that parents should be allowed to decide if they want their children vaccinated. The Mexican government among others have taken this up and have recommended that parents should be able to show proof of their childrens vaccinations before they are allowed in on certain public space.. Mexico’s president stated on Monday that his country has no intentions to demand evidence of COVID-19 immunization from citizens or visitors.

Despite the recent increase in verified coronavirus cases globally, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said during a news conference held by the Mazatlan Tourism Promotion Office that vaccination requirements are not part of the government’s long-term health and safety objectives.

Reopening from COVID-19

“There are now some big demonstrations in Europe because vaccination evidence is needed to move about or attend shopping malls or restaurants, and people are opposed to that,” Lopez Obrador stated. “As for Mexico, we will not need such evidence in any way. That is something I want to be extremely clear about.”

Last week, the Quintana Roo Tourism Board debunked erroneous reports from media outlets that the Mexican state’s Governor Carlos Joaquin enacted a policy mandating proof of vaccination and a negative COVID for entry into hotels, restaurants and bars.

“This isn’t a directive. Unfortunately, local news sources misunderstood this information, which was picked up by foreign media,” a spokesman for the Quintana Roo Tourism Board told ‘s Claudette Covey. “The government said that in order for restaurants and bars to operate at a greater capacity, businesses must establish a ‘safe health environment,’ which would include vaccinating and testing all workers, as well as asking customers to provide evidence of vaccination or antigen tests.”

The spokesman added, “This was a recommendation on how to create a safer workplace, but it was never a governmental mandate or obligation.” “As of today, no restaurant, bar, or hotel has declared that these procedures would be implemented.”

Despite the United States’ decision to keep land crossings with Mexico closed to non-essential travel until August 21, the country anticipates a recovery in foreign visitor numbers this summer as COVID-19 vaccinations become more widely accessible.

Mexican Tourism Minister Miguel Torruco Marques revealed SECTUR’s visitor projections for July and August, estimating that 20.2 million visitors would visit the country.

Furthermore, according to statistics from Mexico’s Federal Commission for the Protection Against Sanitary Risks, 99.5 percent of the country’s beaches are categorized as appropriate for recreational use (Cofepris).
