San Diego is a beautiful city with a lot to offer. One must-visit destination is the Majestic Princess hotel in Mission Valley, which offers an unbeatable view of the Pacific Ocean and some of the best pizza in town.

The Majestic Princess was coming into San Diego port as I awoke this morning. I wouldn’t know what a beautiful port this is to sail into and out of until we were departing since I’d slept in.

The first 24 hours aboard have been fantastic so far. I haven’t been on a Royal class ship in years, as I stated yesterday. I’d forgotten how much I like the layout and flow of these ships, particularly the buffet and its dining stations.

Unfortunately, since we’re running at a lower capacity, my favorite buffet location, The Bakery, will be closed for this voyage. I was disappointed to learn this, since The Bakery is a great go-to place for items like fresh pie, morning pastries, cookies, and rolls… It’s certainly a carb-nightmare, avoider’s but in the morning, I’m a sucker for things like that.

Before going ashore, we had breakfast at the buffet. I’ll confess that the buffet has been hit-or-miss for me so far… I also want to enjoy the cuisine. When it comes to cuisine, Princess is usually well-liked.

The embarkation lunch was excellent yesterday… Roast beef, pear salad, and noodles were on my plate. Today’s breakfast, on the other hand, was a bit of a mishmash. Although I finally discovered excellent danishes — something I strangely like eating on ships but virtually never on dry ground — several of the choices were either rock hard or cold. They were just perfect.

Cruise ships may easily disorient you, and you may find yourself unable to distinguish between left and right, forward and aft. On board, I observed the ship’s port and starboard sides had distinct colored carpets. The carpet on the port side is red, while the carpet on the starboard side is blue. I knew I needed to go towards the red as soon as I stepped off the elevator.

I appreciate the Ocean Medallion technology since it enables you to enter and exit the ship by just tapping the gadget. It’s fast and easy, and it’s another method to minimize touch points by not having to pass anything over to a crew member (like with a keycard).

San Diego is a lovely port that is extremely walkable, which is always attractive to cruise passengers who don’t want to have to take a bus or a taxi to see anything fascinating. I needed to meet up with my buddy Peter, so I took an Amtrak train to Oceanside. The pier was just a five-minute walk from the railway station. On the way, I stopped to photograph Holland America’s ms Koningsdam, which was moored next to us.

I returned to San Diego after meeting with my buddy and had just enough time to join up with some other friends along the pier. Then it was time to board the ship again.

My stomach was grumbling at this point. Alfredo’s, a casual Italian restaurant on Princess ships, is renowned for its gourmet pizzas and other snacks. I went here for a Hawaiian pizza and antipasto dish after being drawn in by the aroma. It was simple to understand — or should I say taste? — why this free eatery has topped a slew of “Best Pizza at Sea” lists throughout the years. Even better, the service was both fast and responsive, which was just what I needed since I needed to be done before the sailaway.

I know it seems like all I’ve done on this trip has been eat, and to some extent, that is true. It’s been true on every trip I’ve done since the ships were brought back into operation. I’ve been taking advantage of every single cruise ship restaurant since I started traveling in late June. Things that we used to take for granted are no longer taken for granted. All of this may be taken away from us at any time (although we hope not).

With the ship just half full, it would have been possible to enjoy the voyage out of San Diego port from almost anyplace on board. However, I wanted to make the most of my balcony, so that’s where I went.

One of the interesting features of this ship is the Seawalk, which is basic yet magnificent. This is a glass bridge that stretches 28 feet out over the ship’s side on deck 16, placing you almost 130 feet over the sea. Even if you don’t have a reason to be in that part of the ship, you should go there for the experience.

I enjoyed seeing how various passengers responded from a neighboring pub where I could people-watch.

For others, it’s just a leisurely walk that doesn’t bother them. Let’s put it this way for the rest of you: One lady closed her eyes and asked her husband to take her hand and stroll her over the Seawalk so she could brag to her friends.

That’s one of the things I’ve always enjoyed about cruising: watching individuals push their own personal limits and attempt new things they wouldn’t normally do at home. Maybe they’re ordering something from the menu that sounds foreign, or maybe they’re just shutting their eyes and saying, “Let’s do this!”

For supper, I went to Bistro Sur La Mer, a French restaurant hidden away on deck seven with a fixed charge of $29 per person. I’ll tell you right now that French cuisine isn’t my thing. It’s not that I don’t like it, but it’s usually much too rich for my stomach.

For that in mind, I chose with the seafood chowder (Lobster Bisque garnished with lobster, scallops, mussels, and quenelle) served in a bowl with a puff pastry crust, which was followed by a filet mignon with sweet onion sauté and red wine jus, as well as hand-cut fries. I didn’t have dessert, but everyone else appeared to like it.

The dinner took a full two hours, which is a little lengthy for me, but I understand that when people go to this kind of place, they want to relax. With a smaller group, it would also be simpler to get out of there faster. At supper, there were 11 of us.

A live band was performing outside the restaurant, and other cruisers were dancing on the plaza. Because of the loudness from the atrium below, I wouldn’t exactly describe the cafe as a “intimate” setting. If the loudness doesn’t bother you, the cuisine is adequate for a specialized establishment.

When it comes to the Piazza atrium, it’s the spot to go if you want to do some dancing. I don’t have two left feet, so you won’t catch me busting a move, but the live music was a hit with a lot of people, and not just in the atrium. They had a Queen cover band do two sets since the Movie Under The Stars was supposed to be Bohemian Rhapsody.

Another thing I learned on this voyage is that they show concerts on the large screen throughout the day. I’m not sure whether this is anything new or if I’ve just never seen it before. When I went by one day to find Shania Twain’s 2014 Las Vegas performance playing, it caught my eye.

Tonight’s performance at the Princess Theater included an impressionist comic who specialized in musical parodies. He performed a nice Garth Brooks spoof to the tune of Friends in Low Places, which I didn’t know. It didn’t last long since, although the ship was clocking in at 10 p.m., my body was still on eastern time.

Harmony, a speciality restaurant aboard that specialized in high-end Chinese cuisine, is another specialty restaurant. I’ll attempt to book reservations for that night tomorrow. This vacation is unique in that, since it is just a three-night cruise, I will not be dining in the main dining room.

If you read my travel reports on a regular basis, you know how much I like eating in the major dining rooms. But I vow that one day before I depart, I will check it out by eating breakfast or lunch there.

We’ll be at Ensenada, Mexico, tomorrow, and I’m looking forward to visiting the Lotus Spa aboard, particularly The Enclave, which is their thermal suite.
