Hey there! One of the most frustrating things about earning Hilton HHonors points is that many of the best redemption values are not published. The only way to get the best deals is to try and book a room and hope that you can get it at the best price. That’s a pretty risky game, though, so it’s nice to know that Hilton HHonors has a new top-tier reward on the horizon: 150,000 points per night (a 50% increase over the current top rate of 100,000 points per night). The catch? It’s only available for stays booked on the Hilton HHonors app!

Hilton currently has two different award charts for standard rooms: one that goes up to 125,000 points per night, and one that goes up to 150,000 points per night. If you book a reservation under either category, you will receive the points you need to redeem for that night. However, the 150,000 point tier is considered a special, top-tier level that is supposed to be used for the best available properties. Hilton members who have reached Diamond elite status report that they have been given a heads-up on this change by Hilton, but the hotels appear to still be available through the regular booking process.

New Hilton top tier exchange – 150,000 points per night (but there seems to be a pricing error)

Gary Leff 3. May 2021

Hilton has confirmed that 150,000 points is the new top premium tier, but still seems to charge incorrectly 120,000 points for the Waldorf Astoria in the Maldives when premium nights are available.

In early 2013, the maximum price that could be paid for a standard room in the Hilton Honors program was 50,000 points. The program has lost much of its value this year. They raised the price per night in the most expensive hotels to 95,000 points (a 90% increase).

Then in 2017, Hilton deleted the rewards tables, but said it wouldn’t make hotels more expensive – in fact, prices might go down. 95,000 points should remain the highest standard award rate. Two years later, the Waldorf Astoria Maldives opened its doors to 120,000.

Two years later, Hilton’s Points Explorer tool began showing that the cost per night was at least 150,000 points. That’s 25% more!

When I asked Hilton about this change, the Waldorf-Astoria Maldives did not appear to have a single night of standard premium availability throughout the year. This hotel is definitely hard to book with points! It now books some nights in the coming weeks where standard rooms are available.

  • Some nights are at the old price of 120,000 points per night.
  • And some nights cost 150,000 points a night.

Standard rooms are not available in May and next year.

I have asked Hilton if the number of points can be changed from 120,000 to 150,000. I thought it might be a mistake. In the end, the hotel rates are not really higher than before and the hotel was simply added to the portfolio, creating a new, higher level of reimbursement. However, Hilton called me back and argued that the rate increase was justified,

We are pleased to offer Hilton Honors members standard refund rates at the Waldorf Astoria Maldives. The resort is unique in that it offers accommodation in all villas with a private pool in each villa, and with its premium pricing it is one of the most sought after properties in our global portfolio, attractive to Hilton Honors members.

The resort has seen a steady increase in occupancy, with standard room rates exceeding $1,000 per night, even during a difficult period for the global travel industry that led to an increase in the resort’s price ceiling. In addition, in our luxury properties, which have a number of special room types, the number of rooms classified as standard varies from hotel to hotel. We are pleased to announce that members can continue to enjoy the fifth night free, as well as redeem their certificates for free weekend nights, allowing our members to enjoy even more benefits at this award-winning resort in an iconic location.

Appropriation : Waldorf Astoria

Strangely, the published minimum redemption price for this hotel has been increased, but you can still book a few nights for less.

However, it’s important to note that when Hilton introduced the new 120,000 award in February 2019, they said they had no plans to include other hotels. After 7 months, they renamed the Pedregal Resort to Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos and began ….. charging. 120,000 points per night, while room rates are often under $700 per night.

In other words, the concern is not so much about price inflation for rewards at a hotel that rarely offers a 7-point-per-night redemption option, but what it might mean for further price increases in Hilton Honors rewards.
