Thinking about your next trips? They love to explore the world and have been to places, have seen the magical world. Why don’t you think about going back to where you were?

Many cities offer so much that you can’t see it all at once. So go back to the city at a different time of the year and you’ll find completely new sites.

Travel in winter, when there are fewer tourists, and talk to the locals. It is not always necessary to wait until the summer, when everyone goes on holiday.

Alfama, Lisbon in January

Alfama, Lisbon Early January

I have selected major cities from all continents that deserve to be reproduced in Fine City Destinations. Maybe you can find a family member who doesn’t have to drive that far?

Cities in Europe, North and South America, Asia, Africa and elsewhere I went to all these cities, sometimes several times, sometimes only once, but I wanted to come back.

Lincoln Memorial, Washington.

The Lincoln Memorial in Washington in mid-November.

Most of the cities I’m going to show you are big, but not all of them. Many cities are interesting, they’re not big.

It’s my choice for you, some of the world’s biggest cities. We start with the eternal city of Rome in Europe.

Major cities to visit: Rome

Big cities to visit, Rome

Winter on the banks of the Tiber, Rome

Bella Roma, so beautiful even in November.

Rome, Italy, is the mother of all cities. The city is full of history and is an ideal place to visit at any time.

It says here that Rome is built on seven hills, but you can’t see the hills, they’re outside the city. The city centre itself is flat and ideal for walking. Because the Roman subway doesn’t cover the entire city and traffic is heavy, walking is the best way to get to know the Eternal City.

Rome, Italy in the pictures, most of the pictures were taken in March:

Rome, the great capital of Italy

To plan your trip to Rome, read my articles on the Top 10 Rome sights: Tour and Rome Centro Storico in 25 evening photos.

Let’s look at a new continent:

San Francisco

Big cities to visit, San Francisco.

Lombard Street, San Francisco.

Car research in San Francisco

Like Rome, San Francisco is built on seven hills, but here the hills are right in the center of the city. The hills of San Francisco are Nob Hill, Telegraph Hill, Russian Hill, Rincon Hill, Twin Peaks, Mount Davidson and Mount Sutro and some other hills beyond.

Steep slopes surrounded by a bay of the Pacific Ocean offer San Francisco an extraordinary view. If you look at San Francisco, you understand why so many people want to move here. California is great, and San Francisco is definitely one of the best parts of it.

They built a red railway bridge to cross the bay and a cable car to go up and down the steep hills. And they built rows of Victorian houses that looked like lace. Everything still exists as it is and more, so go to San Francisco.

San Francisco at the end of April:

Since San Francisco is a vast area, the best way to explore it is by car. To plan your trip, read my San Francisco visit reports: Drive and visit San Francisco’s Golden Gate neighborhood.

Then back to Europe:

Lisbon

Lisbon

Lisbon's trams take you through the hills.

In Lisbon, the trams go up and down the hills…

There’s something magical about the Seven Hills. In my next city, Lisbon in Portugal, there are also many hills, and just like in San Francisco, the hills of Lisbon fill the city, so they cannot be avoided.

Lisbon has trams, cable cars, elevators and long stairs to get up and down the hills. I was in Lisbon for the first time in early January, the coldest season of the year, but the air was clear and it was about 14 degrees Celsius:

Lisbon, Portugal, can be seen from tram line 28 of Lisbon.

In Lisbon, the tram is the best way to see the city. Spend the day exploring Lisbon with tram 28. It’s the tram that takes you to the best parts of the city.

If you like history and you want some palaces, Lisbon, Portugal has a bonus for you. The palaces in the mountains of Sintra are only a short train ride away.

Major cities to visit: Washington

Waxington DC

Washington, D.C. National Trade Center, United States.

We finally have a city with only one hill, but which is important at the same time. The only hill in the American capital is the Capitol, from where the whole country is controlled.

The massive National Mall Avenue starts at the Capitol and leads to the Lincoln Memorial 4 miles west. In between there is a wonderful concentration of museums with wonderful exhibitions about nature, the people and the history of the country.

All this makes Washington a real treasure for anyone who wants to get to know the country of America.

Visit to Washington in November

You can walk for hours and days in these museums, and to find out more, just go back. If you want to plan a visit to this fantastic city, you can find information in my Walking Itinerary of the National Mall, Washington DC and in the Washington DC Post Office: A walk on Capitol Hill.

And now something for my African readers and for us Europeans. The North African city of Marrakech:

Major cities to visit: Marrakech

Marrakech

Big cities to visit: Marrakech, Morocco

It is hard to believe that such cities still exist. The pink city of Marrakech, in the desert, is where the caravans of traders from North and Central Africa meet. Marrakech is still the point of sale as it was, and most of the trade takes place in the bazaars.

On Jemaa El Fna Square, which is on the UNESCO list, the country’s millennial traditions are preserved and life in the bazaars continues as if nothing has changed for a thousand years. Sugar herbs, coloured threads and brass products change hands theatrically.

Dive into the sauces and enjoy the noise and bustle of Marrakech, Morocco!

What about Asian cities? There are many, and I’ve chosen two, Bangkok and Tokyo:

Bangkok

Some Arun temple in Bangkok.

Bangkok, Thailand

Big cities to visit: Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok, Thailand, is a transport hub and gateway to Asia, which is part of why the city is so vibrant. The city attracts 22 million tourists a year and is the second most visited city in the world after Hong Kong. There must be a reason why so many people have chosen to return to Bangkok over and over again.

Bangkok is a large, lively and animated city, where life takes place on the streets. No matter what time of year you arrive, the air is always warm and humid. Because it is very hot, the best way to explore Bangkok is to take a boat: We’re getting more fresh air on the river.

You can see Bangkok, Thailand, from the river.

Most of Bangkok’s main attractions are located on the main Chao Praya River. Take the ferry on the Chao Praya River and explore Bangkok by boat!

Visits to Asian cities: Tokyo

The art of paper and flowers, a typical Tokyo show.

The long Japanese doors of the temple

Tokyo

The Japanese have a love for old people…

My second Asian favorite, Tokyo, is another giant.

Tokyo is the largest metropolis in the world, with more than 30 million inhabitants. But this is something very different from the noisy Bangkok: Tokyo, far from it, isn’t chaos. The Japanese are so well organized that they know how to use their trains. They stand in line and know exactly where the subway door opens.

Tokyo, the capital of Japan in October:

Tokyo is a mixture of old and new.

A very modern country wants to preserve its traditions. Tokyo has many old neighborhoods next to glass skyscrapers, and the Japanese like to walk in the old suburbs and well-maintained parks.

To learn more about the old and historic part of Tokyo, take a look at my article Four short walks in old Tokyo.

Then I have two other cities in the southern hemisphere:

Melbourne

Melbourne, visible from the Yarra River.

Melbourne

Melbourne, winter and August sunshine

For many of us the southern hemisphere is so far away, but for you who live there, Melbourne, Australia and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Melbourne, Australia – A city of four million inhabitants of the CBD, including the tallest building in the southern hemisphere, the Eureka Tower. However, the Australian city has a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere in a small town.

The Greek and Italian neighbourhoods where immigrants from these countries settled still exist. Melbourne also has a large immigrant museum, the Chinatown, which shows how, why and where people came to this country. And in Melbourne there are good exhibitions of Australian Aboriginal art.

To plan a trip to Melbourne, read my articles about the sights of Melbourne: Tram and sightseeing bus ride, ride on the Yarra River in downtown Melbourne and visit the nature of Melbourne’s penguins and possums.

Melbourne is also a good starting point for exploring the distant continent. See koalas on the Great Ocean Road, penguins on Phillip Island and kangaroos in Sydney.

Rio de Janeiro

The statue of Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The great cities of the world: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The last city on my list is Rio de Janeiro, a colorful Brazilian city of carnival, joy and samba. And also the city of great natural beauty.

The location of Rio de Janeiro is magical. The city lies on a narrow strip between the sea and the mountains. On one side, a warm blue ocean, on the other, scattered mountains, all looking like sugar bread. Some are smaller, some are bigger, but they all look the same.

On the highest peak is the statue of Christ, one of the symbols of the city, which was erected in Paris and partly brought to Brazil. Take a walk around the statue and admire the panorama from the foot, visiting the great rainforest and Brazilian favelas along the way. Then walk along the famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema and dine on the Samba tonight. Rio de Janeiro, river of January!

But we came in February:
