Walt Disney World has announced that its cruise line will have a homeport at Port Everglades on the Florida coast, starting in 2020. The new port is just one of several major developments that are transforming the area into an epicenter for tourism and leisure pursuits.

The “disney cruise out of fort lauderdale” is a news story about Disney Cruise Line adding Port Everglades as their year-round homeport.

With a new ship on the way, Disney Cruise Line has chosen Port Everglades as a secondary primary port from which its ships would cruise. The cruise line has operated from its base in Port Canaveral, Florida, for many years, adjacent to Orlando and the Disney theme parks.

Despite the fact that Disney ships have sailed from Port Miami, California, and Texas on a seasonal basis, Port Everglades has never been a stop for the cruise line. This, however, is about to change.

Lease for 15 years with options to extend

According to the Disney Cruise Line Blog, the cruise line has agreed to let Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale serve as a homeport for its ships for at least 15 years, with the option to extend the lease for another 15 years. Disney will have year-round access to Cruise Terminal 4 beginning in October 2023. The agreement also includes the use of a second terminal two years down the road.

Year-round, at least one ship is docked at the harbor, conducting four- and five-night trips. For the first two years, Disney has promised 400,000 passengers per year, a figure that would rise after the second terminal opens.

Port Everglades and Disney Cruise Line have been in discussions for some months. The cruise line said in May that they were looking at the prospect of utilizing Port Everglades, stating that they had been made aware of developing possibilities in the port and were in the process of commencing official discussions.

With the establishment of Port Everglades, the cruise line will have a new cruise port from which to market voyages and will be closer to the activity in Southern Florida. According to the agreement between the port and the cruise line, Terminal 4 will need certain renovations.

Significant Investments are on the Horizon

Despite the fact that Station 4 was recently rebuilt with a $120 million new parking garage, the Herron Garage, Disney expects to pay half of the $12 million required to bring the terminal up to Disney’s standards. The cruise operator will also spend half a million dollars on enhancements to the berths’ maritime infrastructure.

Upgrades to the terminal include check-in booths, seating for 1000 people, charging stations, and entertainment and information displays.

PortMiami has been in talks with Disney Cruise Line about sharing the new Berth 10 at PortMiami since May of this year; however, Disney Cruise Line declared its intention to sign a preferred Berthing Agreement with Port Everglades, which has already been completed.

The Disney Cruise Line currently has four cruise ships in service, all of which are departing from US ports. The Disney Magic is situated in Miami, the Disney Wonder will be in Galveston starting next week, and the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy are stationed in Port Canaveral.

Next year, the cruise company intends to debut the much-anticipated Disney Wish, which is expected to debut in June 2022. In 2024 and 2025, two sister ships to Disney Wish will sail. Because the new tankers utilize LNG as their principal fuel, it is doubtful that they will operate from Port Everglades.
