This week, we’re getting closer and closer to the first cruise ship with a round-the-world itinerary and a cabin that can fit a Princess Cruise ship (or any ship that’s at least 61 meters long).

When Royal Caribbean International signs a deal with the Japanese company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., the first of a series of new passenger ships will be launched, a new ship named the Symphony of the Seas. This first of a “class” of ships will feature a nearly billion dollar budget, a 355-foot-long steel hull, a tonnage of 68,000 tons, a fleet of 3,000 passengers and a cost per passenger that can reach as high as $25,000.

The “Princess Cruises” line of cruise ships has long been one of the very best selling lines of cruise ships in the world, making the brand all the more important for the cruise lines to continue to expand and improve upon the fleet. Among the newest additions to the fleet is the “Crown Princess” which is set to debut in 2018, followed by the “Sovereign” in 2020, the “Regal Princess” in 2022, and finally the “Royal Princess” in 2024. Each of these ships will each come in at over 11,000 tons, with over 700 staterooms spread across the entire ship.. Read more about us cruises and let us know what you think.

Fincantieri, the Italian shipbuilder, has begun work on the first next-generation Princess cruise ship. The new ship, which will be the first of two 175,000 gross-ton cruise ships, will be fueled by LNG.

Princess Cruises’ First Sphere-Class

Despite the fact that Princess Cruises and its parent business, Carnival Corporation, have been severely harmed by the suspension of operations, the cruise line is still building new ships. On September 3, the first steel cutting took place in the San Giorgio di Nogaro (Udine) plant of Centro Servizi Navali, marking a significant milestone. This is not the shipyard; instead, it is Fincantieri’s sheet metal manufacturing business.

It now indicates that actual building, rather than simply design and planning, has begun. The ship will be Princess Cruises’ first Sphere-class ship, ushering in a new age of ship design fueled by LNG, the maritime industry’s most ecologically friendly fuel technology and the cleanest fossil fuel on the planet.

Other Carnival cruise brands, including AIDA Cruises, Costa Cruises, P&O Cruises, and Carnival Cruise Line, already operate new LNG-powered cruise ships, a new trend across the industry as new ships are constructed.

As a result, the yet-to-be-named Sphere-class ship will have 175,000 gross tons and have a 4,300-guest capacity. No further information has been released by the cruise company. The new ship will be finished in November 2023, according to the existing timetable. In 2025, a second similar vessel will be built.

Princess Cruises presently has 14 cruise ships in its fleet, including the newest ship, Enchanted Princess, which debuted in 2020. The Royal-class ships are the newest in the fleet, although they are not LNG-powered and have a gross tonnage of between 145,000 and 145,000 tons, depending on the ship.

Due to the worldwide epidemic that ravaged the cruise industry, the cruise company was forced to sell two of its older ships. Both the Sun Princess and the Sea Princess were sold in 2020 and are no longer in operation.

As Princess Cruises releases more information on its first new Sphere-class cruise ship, including initial renderings, itineraries, and ship amenities, Cruise Hive will keep readers informed.
