Britain’s largest cruise line, P&O Cruises, part of Carnival Corp, has announced the construction of a port for its newest ship, the Arvia. A mega ship for liquefied natural gas is currently under construction in Germany.

The ship will depart from the Caribbean islands of Barbados and Antigua on 7 and 14 day voyages. At the same time, 22-day flights to and from Southampton will be available.

for the sun

While sister ship Iona was designed with the British Isles and Northern Europe in mind, Arvia will have specially designed amenities to take full advantage of the sunlight and views in the Caribbean.

According to Paul Ludlow, chief executive officer of P&O, the Caribbean islands will provide the perfect backdrop for the new liquefied natural gas vessel:

The Caribbean is the perfect location for the maiden voyage of the Arvia, a ship whose every facet, including the unique SkyDome retractable roof and Skywalk overhead cables, is designed to provide exceptional views of the ocean, coastline and surroundings.

From the beginning, the concept of Arvia was designed to be the quintessential sunny resort, offering the perfect opportunity to enjoy the turquoise Caribbean waters and white sand beaches like never before.

New ship – new destination

The islands of Antigua and Barbados will be the new transfer ports for the UK’s most popular cruise line. After its launch in December 2022, the ship will cruise the Caribbean throughout its inaugural season. The air cruise itineraries will call at several famous Caribbean islands and a new port.

The new Caribbean itineraries will call at La Romana in the Dominican Republic, P&O Cruises’ first port of call. Other ports of call include the Dutch island of Curaçao in the Caribbean and the ports of Martinique, St. Kitts, St. Lucia and St. Martin in the Eastern Caribbean.

P&O Cruises chairman Paul Ludlow said:

Arvia Holidays, along with the rest of our 2022 winter season, will be on sale very soon. We look forward to bringing our newest ship to our glorious home port of Barbados, as well as Antigua, where P&O Cruises will make its first port of call.

About Arvia

Arvia, i.e. from the sea coast, will arrive with a volume of 184,700 gross tons and will carry 5,200 passengers. The second Superior class ship will be identical in design to sister ship Iona.

The Arvia, which is being built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany, is P&O Cruises’ newest ship, after the company welcomed the P&O Iona last year. The ships are built on the same basis as the Carnival Mardi Gras, Smeralda and AIDAnova.

With the arrival of the Arvia, P&O UK’s fleet will consist of seven ships:

  • Arcadia – 1952 passengers – 83 781 GT
  • Aurora – 1,878 passengers – 76,152 GT
  • Azura – 3,096 passengers – 115,000 GT
  • Great Britain – 3 647 passengers – 143 730 GT
  • Ventura – 3 192 passengers – 116 017 GT
  • Iona and Arvia – 5,200 passengers – over 180,000 GT.

There has been some good news for P&O UK recently. With more and more information on Arvia in recent weeks, the relaunch of domestic cruises in the UK in just two months and the first flight to Iona imminent, the tide seems to be turning for at least one of Carnival’s brands at a critical juncture.
