Carnival Cruise Lines is a cruise line owned and operated by Carnival Corporation & plc (LSE:CCL). Carnival Cruises is the largest cruise ship operator in the world and the second largest cruise company after Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCL.L).

Talk about a clash of cultures and political agendas—the Carnival Cruise Line has asked cruise passengers to prove they are vaccinated against certain diseases before they board their ships.

The decision not to admit unvaccinated guests or to find an alternative was not easy for Carnival Cruise Line. The cruise line has therefore decided to take the same approach as Royal Caribbean did a few weeks ago.

Carnival Cruise Line will add a lump sum to guests’ accounts for testing during and towards the end of the cruise. Brand spokesman John Heald revealed that.

Test specification for non-approved products

The cruise line will never be able to please everyone, and to ensure that all passengers remain safe and healthy, Carnival is now requiring testing for unvaccinated guests. This is in addition to the Carnival travel insurance that was already added last week. Last week, the cruise line announced the following on its website:

Each unvaccinated guest must present proof of valid travel insurance at the time of registration, with coverage of at least $10,000 per person and $30,000 for emergency medical evacuation, COVID-19 not excepted. Guests who do not have the required proof of insurance will not be allowed to sail and no refunds will be given.

All unvaccinated guests, including children, must be tested on board. Carnival will add $150 per person to the guest bill. This test does not include the mandatory negative test that guests must show before boarding the ship, but does include a test during and near the end of the cruise.

The cost for a family of four that is not vaccinated but is allowed to bathe is $600. A sum which John Heald knows is not inconsiderable to pass on:

We know this comes with costs you may not have thought of when you booked your cruise, but we need to make sure everyone is safe. I want to apologize, as a father and also as a brand ambassador, that the tests cost $150 per person. We have to protect you, we have to protect everyone, and we have to do it right.

While pricing is not welcome, it would probably affect relatively few people. Carnival adheres to CDC regulations for its flights, which require at least 95 percent of guests on board to be vaccinated, or the ship will not sail.

Two ships have already set sail, the Carnival Vista and Carnival Horizon made their maiden voyages this week, the Carnival Breeze will depart in a few days and the Mardi Gras and Carnival Miracle will depart in a few weeks – Carnival Cruise Line is doing its best to make sure everything goes smoothly. And with two successful first cruises since the pandemic, the cruise line is doing just that.

But even the smallest problem with COVID can turn into a media nightmare for the company. Unsurprisingly, the cruise line is taking steps to ensure that COVID-19 does not come on board.

Updated rules for cruise lines don’t close the door on people who want to travel but haven’t yet been vaccinated, even if it means a significant extra cost.
