Every mile on Florida Keyes Overseas has a green mark that goes from 113 miles on the Miami-Dade/Monro County line to 0 in the K-West. Markings are often used to indicate places of interest and even addresses. Keep an eye on the beacons as they are the best way to navigate the Florida Keys.

The keys can be divided into three regions:

  • Top buttons: From Ki Largo to Islamorad. These are the most popular keys because they are easily accessible on a day or weekend trip from Miami and nearby cities.
  • Middle buttons: The 7-mile bridge indicates the separation between the middle and upper button.

The marathon is the biggest key in 10 miles and the biggest city in the middle. These keys are much quieter and less populated than keys further north.

Other striking keys in the middle are Vaca Key, Fat Deer Key and Grassy Key. The keys to the area are famous for their fishing heritage, and it’s a great place to sample the local crabs and lobsters.

The Marathon is famous for its 7-mile bridge (actually 6.79 miles long), one of the longest segmented bridges in the world.

  • Lower buttons: The lower keys are much quieter. The Lesser Islands area is connected to the western end of the Seven Mile Bridge at Sun Key.

Key West is the largest city in the Lower Keys. A region typical of its natural beauty. The Lower Keys are home to nature reserves, a national marine reserve and a state park, as well as one of the best diving and diving locations in the state.
