The incredible Amex Platinum offer allows you to earn 210,000 bonus points (or more).

I am paid for the content and many links of this blog. Citibank is an advertising partner of this site, as are American Express, Chase, Barclays and Capital One. All opinions expressed in this post are my own and have not been reviewed, approved or endorsed by my advertising partners. I do not write on all available credit cards. Rather, I focus on miles, points and cashback (and the currencies that can be converted into them). Terms and conditions apply to the offers and benefits listed on this page.

American Express has a major new offer for the American Express Platinum Card®. In past years, customers could earn 60,000 bonus points with the main offer, and there were targeted offers for more.

They now have a public offer that allows you to earn 210,000 bonus points more than you would normally get by spending on the card. It consists of two parts:

  • 75,000 bonus points after spending $5,000 in 6 months.
  • 10 points per dollar on the first $15,000 spent at gas stations and supermarkets in the U.S. within 6 months of account opening.

You can also use the CardMatch tool to see if an even bigger offer is coming your way. Benet Wilson points out several great offers you can check out if you use the tool, including a 100,000 point offer on Platinum and a 75,000 point offer on American Express® Gold (which, again, you can get in Rose Gold).

The first part of the office – alone – is far greater than the public offerings we’ve seen in recent years. But the real gain comes from the ability to earn 10 points per dollar on the $15,000 spent in the U.S. gas station and supermarket categories, for a total of 150,000 additional points.

Another way to look at it is the discount on gasoline and grocery costs (in the United States). I estimate the value of Membership Rewards points at 1.8 cents each, so 10 points per dollar actually represents an 18% discount on your first $15,000 of gas and grocery spending over six months.

If you take full advantage of the offer, that’s 150,000 points at 10x spend and 75,000 points after $5,000 of spending over six months, or 225,000 points. Since the card usually earns you 1 point per dollar on the $15,000 you spend on gas and groceries, you must subtract 15,000 points from the total “initial bonus” and call it “up to 210,000 points.”

The benefits of the card

It’s clearly worth getting the card based on this new offer alone. I’m keeping my card, though, and I think it’s worth $550 a year (see Fees and Charges), based on the $200 annual Uber credit (which can be used with Uber Eats and now also with the Eats Pass); the $200 annual airline credit (Southwest was my favorite airline for this); the $100 annual Saks credit; and access to lounges (Centurion, Delta, Priority Pass, Plaza Premium) and Hilton and Marriott Gold status.

The best way to spend money on airline tickets

I also like to earn 5 points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines (or American Express Travel). Effective January 1, 2021, these 5 point earnings will be limited to $500,000 per calendar year for these purchases. There are literally people who use it for more than that and earn millions of points.

Finally, it should be noted that you get 5 points per dollar for prepaid hotel bookings on amextravel.com, although this means you have to give up elite benefits, hotel points and credit for stays at these hotels, which I think is only useful for non-chain hotel bookings.
