Warrior Trail State Park is named for the trail used by Native Americans to travel between the Ohio River to the north and the Smoky Mountains to the south. Warriors Way State Park may not be as famous as nearby Smoky Mountains National Park, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less interesting or unique to visit.
A brief history of the Warrior’s Path
The Warrior Trail was originally formed by the Cherokee of East Tennessee and the Shawnee of Ohio and used as a hunting trail. The Indian tribes called this road Athiamiowee, or the road of the army. Because the two tribes were enemies, they often clashed along the way.
Surrounded by tall trees and wildflowers, the path was about 15 inches wide, ideal for hunting game. Over time the road expanded and was used for trade and war declarations.
In the 1700s, European settlers began using the trail. The English pioneers called this path the Warrior Trail, and it naturally became part of the Wilderness Road, one of the two main routes the settlers used to reach Kentucky from the east.
